HouseMouse is a basic attribute-based search neighborhood and apartment search tool I built to help people find the best place to live in NYC, by compiling publicly available data at the zipcode and census tract level. Census tract level median rent data captures pockets of affordability in desirable neighborhoods people might otherwise be expected to be priced out of, while data on commute time to a specified office location, access to parks and other neighborhood amenities helps introduce people unfamiliar with NYC to neighborhoods they might not consider otherwise (for example, LIC/Hunter’s Point for people working in Midtown). I’m making usability improvements, and hope to add curated listings in each area soon to increase the usefulness of the tool.
